Why I chose the name Studio Casau…

A little about why I chose the name…

I am a Welsh person, though I don’t speak the language fluently.

I’m a bit bitter about this.

It’s my favourite word in the Welsh language, due to it’s emphatic expression of disgust.

I remember being taught the word by my Welsh teacher at comprehensive school, and the emphasis of its sibilance, its hissing which to me conjured images of a loathful snake.

In the past I have made things that express pain, hatred, explorations of mental health and general discomfort, whether that has been directly through performance, in the package of a 5ft1 ‘woman’ who probably to most looks quite cute, or through the medium of stop frame animation, which in it’s childish whimsy, appears harmless.

Knowing that a lot of people won’t understand the word Casau (though a lot will) provides me with a layer of protection or mystery
